David Perkins (1952-2017): Ambassador, Donor and Grandson of Perkins’ Namesake
Perkins commemorates the passing of R. David Perkins on Tuesday, August 22, 2017. David was the son of long-time Perkins director, Franklin H. “Bud” Perkins, Jr., and grandson of Franklin Haskins Perkins, M.D., the eminent child psychiatrist for whom the agency is named. David was the third generation of his family to serve Perkins. He was a long-time ambassador for the agency, and loyal donor and friend with a uniquely personal interest in seeing Perkins flourish and succeed.
The Perkins Family left a remarkable legacy here at Perkins. The small residential school that David’s grandfather moved to Lancaster in 1922 continues to serve developmentally disabled adults in residential and vocational settings, children with complex learning and mental health needs, a variety of other groups with special needs, as well as typically developing infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.
David Perkins was an avid outdoorsman and camper, as well as an accomplished woodworker and handyman. He was a supporter of a number of diverse agencies and organizations, and to improving the quality of life for all. He will be missed and remembered.
