Our experience has been that family involvement contributes a great deal to treatment and the success of our program. We maintain a great deal of contact with families regarding their family members. We encourage our residents and clients to communicate with their families as often as possible by phone, mail, e-mail. To foster additional contact and involvement with our families, we sponsor quarterly family events that have become important program traditions. Our Holiday Social, Fall Festival, Spring Fling and the Awards Banquet have consistently been well-received and provide opportunities for staff and families to mingle.
“My son, Alex, has lived at the Barlow Apartments for 13 years. It is a comfortable and happy home for him! The staff are wonderful.”
– Trix Oakley, Mother of a Barlow Resident and Perkins Trustee
The commitment of our families is demonstrated by their involvement in helping us provide quality programs. We have an active group of family members, who serve on various agency committees, such as our Human Rights Committee and on the Perkins Board of Trustees.
We have families who serve as personal supports for new families. These families have already faced the challenges of placing an adult child in out-of-home care or finding a quality day placement and are helpful in supporting new parents who share the same anxieties and concerns about placement.
“With the support and encouragement of a staff of caring professionals, the day program at Perkins provides a homelike setting where clients like my son, Michael, are given the opportunity for success in many endeavors. He is in an atmosphere among friends where he can be happy and proud of his accomplishments.”
