On Friday, January 16, Perkins Ambassadors participated in the first Ambassador Adopt a Classroom Reception. Perkins Ambassadors are business partners, members of the communityand supporters of Perkins who have an interest in special education, mental health and in supporting our work. Adopt a Classroom is an opportunity for a Perkins Ambassador to learn more about the challenges and successes of our students at the Doctor Franklin Perkins School by spending time with a specific class throughout the year. “The Adopt a Classroom program was established to support our students’ ability to connect with the community through the relationship we have with our incredible group of Ambassadors,” stated Cindy Wing, Director of Curriculum and Instruction at the school and organizer of the event.
Director of Education, David Cook, welcomed ambassadors: Senator Jennifer Flanagan and Constituent Services Director Annie Perla; Joe Mule, Director of the Lancaster Library; David Masiello of Masiello Construction; and Tom Wing of HB Communications, as well as students and faculty. Following the reception, ambassadors spent time with students in classrooms and enjoyed discussions about career paths of current ambassadors, resources available to students in community, and the importance of education for future pursuits.
The school plans to hold additional receptions so all classrooms involved in the program can enjoy a similar and valuable experience. “The Adopt a Classroom program is a wonderful opportunity for our distinguished Ambassadors to be part of the learning environment at the Doctor Franklin Perkins School. Being a contributing member to a classroom will provide a unique perspective and I hope the experience will create wonderful memories and friendships,” said Cook.
