On Monday, November 10, 2014, students, staff, and special guests gathered to celebrate and show appreciation for the service of our veterans. Staff, parents, and members of the local community who have served in the armed forces gathered in the Janeway Education Center Auditorium to hear students read poems and essaysrelated to military service. Each veteran was recognized with a certificate of appreciation. Veterans recognized were:
David Marsh Scott Calhoun John Kenny
Robert Wilmont Dawn Whynot Beth Wells
Richard Warrington Adam Thibault Henry Paszko
Harold Naughton David Hollingsworth Chris Detsikas
Jon Bohannon Melissa Largey Doug Reid
The poetry and readings included messages of gratitude to veterans for protecting our country, making sacrifices, and placing our country’s needs before the needs of oneself. The youngest of those joining us was two-year old Aiden Bohannon who enthusiastically joined his father, Jon Bohannon, in accepting his certificate of appreciation. Aiden attends the Perkins Child Development Center. The Ceremony closed with a beautiful piece by teacher Bill Carrier on the piano and clinician Erin Chetwynd on the violin. The duet performed “Ashokan Farewell” from Ken Burns’s Civil War program which wascomposed by Jay Ungar.
“I continue to be amazed with how our students express themselves so eloquently at these gatherings. They are confident, reflective and passionate about their feelings and I am very proud to be part of it. On behalf of the men and women acknowledged for their military service, I would like to express a heartfelt thank you for inviting us to share the Veterans Day assembly with you. It truly was a wonderful event,” stated David Cook, Director of Education.
